Magellan Explorist 400™ FAQ: Model Overview

The Magellan Explorist 400™ is a member of the popular Magellan™ eXplorist line of handheld GPS receivers. These units are more similar than they are different, so the easiest way to understand the difference is to just list them sequentlly from the bottom of the line to the top of the line and explain the successive differences.

  • Magellan Explorist 210™ is the base model unit. It has a black and white display, uses AA batteries, and has 24MB of fixed (non-expandable) memory.

  • Magellan Explorist 400™ is essentially an Magellan Explorist 210™ but with only 8MB of internal memory, but adds an SD memory slot for storage of user data. It also comes with a LiIon battery that can be recharged inside the unit instead of commodity batteries.

  • Magellan Explorist 500™ is like an Magellan Explorist 400™ but adds a 16 color TFT display. This unit was discontinued in late 2006 in favor of the Magellan Explorist 500LE

  • Magellan Explorist 500LE™ is the Magellan Explorist 500™ but without the LiIon battery and charger. It's believe to the the exact same hardware as the Magellan Explorist 500™ only it includes the AAA battery clip instead of the LiIon battery and charger.

  • Magellan Explorist 600™ is like Magellan Explorist 500™ with with electronic compass, barometer, thermometer, and altimeter. Meridian users might find it convenient to consider 500 is to 600 as Gold is to Platinum.

  • Magellan Explorist XL™ is essentially an Magellan Explorist 500™ (color, but no sensors) in a case with larger buttons and screen, a different basemap than the rest of the units, and the requirement of 4 AA batteries instead of either AA's or the LiIon.
