Magellan Triton 2000 FAQ: Model Overview

The Magellan Triton 2000 is a member of the Magellan™ Triton line of handheld GPS receivers.

Triton was announced in August of 2007 and began shipping in early 2008.

The units have increased features as the model number goes up. Each seems to build upon the feature set of the lower numbered unit.

Common Features:

  • Color QVGA screens, though the size varies.
  • SirfStar III receiver circuit for excellent reception.
  • Waterproof to IPX-7 standards, meaning they can be immersed in up to one meter for as long as 30 minutes.
  • Use of AA batteries.

The line seems to break into two progressions: the three digit models and the four digit models. First, the three digit members.

  • Magellan Triton 200™ is the entry level unit. It has only a basemap with no ability to upload extra maps. MSRP: $129 USD.
  • Magellan Triton 300™ Adds ability to upload maps to internal fixed memory. Includes Vantage Point software, but it's not clear at this time if that is the mapping software or if the map data is extra. MSRP: $149 USD.
  • Magellan Triton 400™ Adds an SD slot for large map storage. MSRP: $199 USD.
  • Magellan Triton 500™ Adds barometric altimiter and tri-axial electronic compass. MSRP: $249 USD.

There is a marked break in the product line as we go into the four digit members. They are larger and thus likely incompatible with cases, brackets, and mounts designed for the three digit products.

  • Magellan Triton 1500™ jumps to a 2.7" screen and is a touch screen. It adds an LED flashlight. It has a speaker and a microphone that can be used to play MP3 or record audio on the trail. It does not have a compass. MSRP $399 USD.
  • Magellan Triton 2000 Adds a 2MP camera that can take geocoded pictures. It also adds the compass and barometric altimiter back. MSRP: $499 USD.
