Can I use the Garmin eTrex Legend HCx for turn-by-turn street driving directions?

When configured with appropriate maps such as City Navigator, the Garmin eTrex Legend HCx can deliver turn by turn directions to a waypoint or point of interest.

2.

How are the turns announced? Is is a human voice?

The Garmin eTrex Legend HCx GPS can be set to beep once when approaching a turn and twice when the action is to be taken. It does not speak.

3.

Can I modify the route it takes?

Sort of. There are menu options to let you avoid toll roads, dirt roads, and such. But you really can't tell it to go from A to B via C. A workaroud is just to number your destinations in the order you want to approach them and let the GPS route you where it wants to go. In the example above, one would GOTO C then GOTO B.

4.

I'd like to visit a number of destinations. Can it pick the optimal route between them and take me there?

No, the Garmin eTrex Legend HCx will not solve the travelling salesman problem.
