What are common hardware failures of the Explorist line?

On units that have them, the joystick seems to commonly become sticky in one or more directions, making movement in that direction difficult.

There also seems to be a high failure rate of the cables. Many users are reporting USB connection problems after a few years of use that are cured by replacing the cable.

When I turn on my unit I get a message that says "Press ENTER to configure NAND Press ESC to cancel." Either option just shuts the GPS unit off. What to do?

To fix this enter the service function menu and select #95 as described here: http://rhamphorinkx.newmail.ru/sf.htm

Following that, you will usually need to reload the basemap. See Q: 6. If service function 95 fails to banish the endless NAND loop, you will likely have to return it to Magellan for repair.

My compass is "stuck" 180 degrees away or is inoperational. What can I do?

Use code number 22 of the Magellan Explorist 600™ FAQ: Undocumented service functions to force a compass recalibration.
