1. | Can I use the Magellan Explorist XL™ for turn-by-turn street driving directions? |
When configured with appropriate maps such as Mapsend DirectRoute, the Magellan Explorist XL™ can deliver turn by turn directions to a waypoint or point of interest.
2. | How are the turns announced? Is is a human voice? |
The Magellan Explorist XL™ GPS can be set to beep slowly when approaching a turn and rapidly when the action is to be taken. It does not speak.
3. | Can I modify the route it takes? |
Sort of. There are menu options to let you avoid toll roads, dirt roads, and such. But you really can't tell it to go from A to B via C. A workaroud is just to number your destinations in the order you want to approach them and let the GPS route you where it wants to go. In the example above, one would GOTO C then GOTO B.
4. | I'd like to visit a number of destinations. Can it pick the optimal route between them and take me there? |
No, the Magellan Explorist XL™ will not solve the travelling salesman problem.
5. | My Magellan Explorist XL™ has quit naming the streets of upcoming turns. How can I get them back? |
Magellan Explorist XL™ has an internal limit of 200 waypoints with comments. When generating a street route, it will generate waypoints named "M0nn" with comments containing the street name and action to be taken. If you have, say, 195 waypoints with comments in the unt and then generate a street route containing eight turns, the last three turns will not have street directions for this reason. The workaround for this is to keep fewer than 200 waypoints with comments in the unit if you value the street names. 180 seems to be a good tradeoff. After twenty turns, you can recalculate the route (goto-goto) to get the next ten directions. |
